Upcoming conference on the Jewish War this coming fall
30 October – 1 November 2018
The “Jewish War” or “First Revolt” against Rome (66-74 CE) remains one of the most perennially captivating conflicts of all time. Yet, measuring the scope of the clash in its reality against the epic rhetoric and complex reception is far from easy. From the time of Josephus down to the present day alternative accounts have been in circulation. Recognizing Steve Mason’s recent study of the war as an important new interpretation of the events and a provocative conversation starter—one that openly or indirectly calls into question many received truths about the struggle—the three-day conference will bring together international experts from diverse fields, institutions, and perspectives to examine and rethink together central aspects of this often mythic history.
