As part of the ÉBAF Thursday Lectures, we were pleased to host a conference devoted to the Gospel according to Saint Mark, given by Prof. José Enrique Aguilar. Two decisive passages of the Gospel were examined: the baptism of Jesus and his death on the cross.
Beginning from these two key passages of the Gospel—the baptism of Jesus and his death on the cross (Mk 1:9–11; 15:37–39)—we explored how the evangelist constructs a theological journey of remarkable depth, in the course of which the identity of Jesus is progressively revealed, culminating in the confession of the centurion.
Professor of Sacred Scripture at St Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie, New York), José Enrique Aguilar invited us to enter into a symbolic reading of the text, attentive to internal correspondences, narrative structures, and the theological signs that run throughout Mark’s account.
Two handouts from the presentation in the form of PDFs can be downloaded:
Mark, the Theologian (English) and
Handouts.
